Remember that feeling, when you were a kid, and your adrenaline was pumping, and you literally felt like, given just a few more moments of intensity, you could probably fly?Our members revisit that feeling, maybe not during burpees, and probably not during thrusters; but perhaps the just-right combination of the two sends them soaring ….
Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration.
But seriously — if you haven’t recently reconnected with that feeling of giving chase to another small person, then turning around and being chased yourself, heart pounding, hair flying, adrenaline pumping, then you’re missing out. Moving your body used to feel like play. It still can.
It’s that electricity running through your body, those magical life endorphins, experienced amongst a crew of good people, that makes our members frustrated when they have to miss a few classes – they not only count on their one hour in class 3-5 times a week, they’ve made it part of their life’s routine — the routine that leads to them having a smaller pant size, better blood pressure, more energy to do things they love, than they had in their early 20s, or even in high school.
Let’s face it: The challenges of adulthood, starting a family, grueling careers, unexpected circumstances, can make it seem easier to just coast through, “wait for the weekend” and accept that getting older means getting tireder, fatter, and prone to constant backache. We’ve all become the victim of circumstance at some point, and there’s no shame in recognizing that; but is living in that space really where you want to make your permanent address? I don’t believe it is. The next step is looking at what’s in front of you, what’s in your hands and available, and asking, “But what CAN I do?”
While we all like to joke about the perils and pitfalls of “adulting,” you’ve never had more power in your hands than you do today – certainly more today than as a second grader giving chase to another kid on the playground, subject to the disappointing whistle of the schoolyard teacher, signaling that recess is over. Today, you can choose what to do with your resources. Nothing is more satisfying than watching our members’ confidence increase in the gym and seeing them soaring in their fitnessing and approach to life. Recess has only just begun.
